All activities have a problem solving element and participants are encouraged to use simple, cheap equipment to help complete the activity. The course is non-threatening, enjoyable and all participants, either parent or teacher learn activities for improving the mathematical achievement of children.
All participants find that maths does not have to be the 'disliked' subject as it was at school. Participants often work in pairs or small groups to undertake the activities so are not threatened regardless of their own attitude or ability in mathematics.
South Island
The director will be in the South Island for a period of
time during 2007. Please contact the Trust if your school or group of
parents are interested in a Family Maths Session
We are able to arrange workshops for Home Schoolers, Groups of parents, Teachers/schools on a request basis. These could be during the day, evening or weekends.
Far North
We are able to negotiate with groups of people, schools
to run training sessions of sessions for Families. Please contact the
Trust if your group is keen to have a vist from the Family Maths Trust
Numeracy For Homeschoolers
These courses are organised, as required, by groups of
homeschoolers. They are usually held in a homeschoolers home with a group
of about 20 people. Each course is planned to meet parents needs so there
could be a one off session or a series
We have regularly facilitated courses for children. These usually run for 1 to 2 hours depending on the age of the children. The content is organised in conjunction with the parents. Ideas could include: Maths from Nature, Magical Maths, Mystery Maths, Problem Solving
Family Maths For Schools
The Director is able to facilitate Family Maths Nights
for schools as a prelude to the school facilitating their own. These evenings
could be a series of 4-6 (ideal) or just an evening. Alternatively the
director is able to 'train' teachers and parents to be able to facilitate
Family Maths Worksops in their own school
Maths Education - Support for Teachers and Schools The, Director - Len Cooper, is able to support teachers and schools in all aspects of maths teaching and learning. He is accredited by the MOE to facilitate the Numeracy Professional Development. Principals, Teachers in charge of maths should make contact with Len for a proposal and pricing.
